Went to Arusha School  and then to Prince of Wales School in Narobi from 1965 to 1968.

Followed the headmaster OC Wigmore to Arnold School in Blackpool with his brother Eric..

His father was regional medical officer in Tanzania.

He returned his wife Jo to Arusha/Moshi in 2014 to climb Kilimanjaro.
